Darlene Eskew

Darlene Henrianna Abercrombie Eskew, of College Park, GA (Cliftondale), passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018 from complications of cancer at the age 88. Darlene was born May 20, 1930 in Banning, GA in Carroll County. She was one of 4 daughters born to Henry Arthur Abercrombie and Malra Mae Winkles Abercrombie. The family settled in East Point, GA where Darlene graduated from Russell High School in 1947. After high school, she attended Southern Business College in Atlanta. Going to town (Atlanta) on the ‘trolley’ from East Point, she met her future husband. She married Stephen Quentin Eskew on October 11, 1952 at Central Christian Church in Atlanta where they were active members. After building a home in Cliftondale in 1960, Darlene & Stephen had two children (Lori & Bill) They were active members of First Baptist Church of Cliftondale and she remained a member until her death. The family was their focus. Darlene worked at Prestolite Battery Company, leaving in 1971 to spend more time with her children. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning, vacations, spending time with her friends, children and grandchildren. She especially enjoyed the grandchildren spending the night and attending VBS at Cliftondale. The love of her life died suddenly in 1984 after 32 years of marriage. During this devastating time, her faith in Jesus and the support of her friends, family, and church helped her to continue on. She worked for Nations Bank (now Bank of America) until she retired to spend more time with her grandchildren in 1993. Darlene and her sisters took care of their mother, who was bedridden for 2 ½ years, until their mother died in 1999. In fall of 2017, she was diagnosed with cancer, a Squamous Cell Carcinoma tumor around her femoral artery. She lived relatively pain free during this time and was amazingly strong. Only a week ago, the tumor damaged the artery. While in the hospital, she succumbed to the effects of the cancer on Saturday, July 21, 2018. She is remembered as one that helped others in need whether they were sick, grieving, or just needing a listening ear. Darlene cared about others before herself and was always kind, wise, had a sweet spirit and pure heart, loving & serving the Lord with her whole heart. She will be deeply missed, but we know that Jesus made the way for which we will be reunited again one day. Darlene is preceded in death by her parents, Malra & Arthur Abercrombie; sister, Onetha Pate; loving husband of 32 years, Stephen Q. Eskew. She is survived by her children; daughter, Lori Eskew Winkler and her husband David; son, Bill Eskew and his wife Becky; her beloved grandchildren, Rachel Winkler, Stephen Winkler, John Winkler, Alex Eskew, and Elizabeth Eskew; sisters, Dorotheal Davis and Sue Espinosa; and many nieces and nephews as well as many dear friends. There will be a receiving of friends from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at Parrott Funeral Home in Fairburn, Georgia (8355 Senoia Rd., Fairburn, GA 30213). Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 1:00 pm (lying in state at 12 noon for visitation prior to the service) at First Baptist Church of Cliftondale (4005 Stonewall-Tell Road, Atlanta, GA 30349). Internment will be held immediately following the ceremony at Forrest Lawn Cemetery (5755 Mallory Rd, College Park, GA 30349).
