Edith Sims Powell

Edith Mae Sims Powell, 90, went peacefully home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on September 6, 2020, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Haleyville, Alabama on May 20, 1930, and a member of a large family of ten brothers and sisters. Edith moved to Georgia as a young lady and soon met and married her one true love, Lindy Powell on September 15, 1950. They were happily married for almost 40 years before his death in 1990. She loved spending time with family and friends, cooking, gardening, church work, volunteering, and traveling. Edith was a devout, dedicated and selfless servant of Jesus Christ, faithfully serving Him throughout her life by giving of her time, talents and financial resources. She generously supported the spreading of the gospel through her tithes and offerings and in using her time and talents to express the love of Jesus. She loved her churches: Forest Hills Baptist Church, Palmetto Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Douglasville. Edith taught Sunday School, was a VBS director, was a WMU director for her church and for the Fairburn Baptist Association, worked in the weekday pre-school, served in the food pantry and participated in many mission trips teaching, cleaning and cooking. She was a former trustee of the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home. For many years, Edith was a volunteer at Christian City Convalescent Center leading a Bible Study and sing-a-long with patients and also at Southwest Christian Care Hospice as a receptionist and assistant to the staff. She was predeceased by her husband Ralph Lindy Powell, her parents Wallace and Josie (Tittle) Sims, brother Cecil Sims, sister Nellie Atkins, brother Leo Sims, sister Jan Hopkins, sister Sheila Ridge, brother Quintin Sims, and brother Drennard Sims. She is survived by her children, Joan Elaine Powell of Douglasville, and Jason Lindy (Gloria) Powell of Chattahoochee Hills, sisters Betty (Doyle) Newsom of Paragould, Arkansas, and Martha (Roland) Shipp of Jackson’s Gap, Alabama. Mrs. Powell is also survived by 5 wonderful grandchildren Erica (Jed) Gillis of Winter Garden, Florida, Joel (Elise) Powell of Senoia, Nathan Powell of Atlanta, Micah (Melissa) Powell of Marietta, and Katie Powell of Chattahoochee Hills, and by 5 precious great grandchildren Judah, Grant, Ellie, James and Ruby, and many other cherished family members and friends. The family will receive friends at Palmetto Baptist Church, Palmetto, Ga., on Saturday, September 12, 2020 from 12 noon until 2pm. A home-going celebration will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at 2 o'clock at Palmetto Baptist Church, with Dr. Jimmy Orr officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park in Fairburn, Ga. Please remember to follow Covid-19 guidelines.
