John "Ted" Lewis, Sr.

John “Ted” Lewis, Sr. of Covington passed away Thursday, December 1, 2016. Mr. Lewis was employed as a foreman/carman on the Southern Railroad from the time of his honorable discharge from the U.S. Naval Forces until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his wife, Hildred LaVerne Dobbs Lewis of Covington; former wife, Bettie Priest Lewis of Atlanta; parents, Willard H. and Kathryn Agnes Lyons Lewis of Atlanta; his brothers and their spouses, W.H. Lewis of Morrow; Walter Combs and Jessie Lee Sweat Lewis of Covington; and James Fed and Bernice Turner Lewis of Birmingham; and great granddaughter, Hannah Ashley Kimball of Marietta. Mr. Lewis is survived by his children, Deborah Lewis (Max) Kimball, Sr., of Cedartown, John Ted (Jill Davis) Lewis, Jr. of Locust Grove; Robert Paul Lewis of Snellville; David Anthony Lewis of Lilburn, and Celina Loudermilk (Kelly) Clay of Locust Grove. His grandchildren include Max M. (Aabri Landers) Kimball, Jr. of Cottonwood Heights, UT; Faith Kimball (Jason H.) Steffan of Henderson, NV; W. Spencer (Nancy Baxter) Kimball, Sr. of Fairfax Station, VA; Conner Daniel Lewis of Locust Grove; Christy Lewis (Eric) Pine of Columbia, MD; David Lee Lewis of Lilburn; Andrew Lee Buford of Marietta, Michelle Lea Buford of Lawrenceville and Emily Beth Clay of Atlanta; eight great grandchildren; Madison Landers; James, Michael and Kimball Steffen; Will, Anna and Macie Kimball; Olive Pine and Maria Lea Todd. Ted Lewis is remembered and cherished for his wry sense of humor, his loyalty to family and friends, his ability to repair just about anything. IN forty two years on the Southern Railroad, he missed exactly two days of work. He was president of the local union and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ted attended Boys High in Atlanta and night school at Georgia State. An ongoing family story is how, after World War II, where he served in the Mediterranean, his first cousin and best friend Wesley Davis talked him into signing up for the reserves. “You know there’ll never be another war. Not after this.” Ted and Wesley both served in the Korean Conflict. Only Wesley says it was Ted doing the talking. Both agree beer was involved. The pallbearers are Ted Lewis, Jr., Bob Lewis, David Lewis, Kelley Clay, Maury Kimball, Spencer Kimball, Dr. Jason Steffen and Larry David Brookshire. Honorary pallbearers will be Max M. Kimball, W.C. Lewis, Bubbie Lewis, Clint Davis, and Tom Dobbs. A funeral service will be held Sunday, December 4, 2016 at 2 o’clock in the Chapel of Parrott Funeral Home with Dr. Jimmy Orr officiating.
