Joyce Hanson Scarbrough

Mrs. Joyce Hanson Scarbrough of Tyrone passed away January 1, 2023. She was born in Coweta County to the late Ishmael and Louise Hanson. She was preceded in death by her brothers, David Hanson and Mike Hanson and is survived by her husband of 65 years, John Scarbrough of Tyrone; daughter, Beth Johnson and her husband Eric of Tyrone; son, John Paul (Jake) Scarbrough and his wife Asima of Fayetteville; sister, Sara Cordy of Kansas City, Mo; sister-in-law, Susan Hanson of Duluth; grandchildren, Josh Johnson and his wife Alysa; Ashton Johnson Thompson and her husband David; Paul Scarbrough; Maya Scarbrough; Ethan Scarbrough; great grandchildren, Woods Johnson, Johnny Thompson and Tommy Thompson and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 6, 2023 at 2 o’clock at the Chapel of Parrott Funeral Home with Dr. Josh Saefkow officiating. Interment to follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park. As a young woman Joyce worked at Ft Gillam and then as a legal secretary. In 1976, she and her husband John started their own real estate company, Scarbrough Properties in College Park and later moved the business to Union City and then Tyrone. She had a strong business acumen and became a top producing real estate broker. She was also a leader in the real estate community and belonged to the Atlanta Board of Realtors in the 70’s and 80’s where she served as Vice President. In later years, she began volunteering at Christian City’s Graceland and logged thousands of hours as a volunteer there. She was also very active in the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary in Peachtree City. As an avid animal lover, she volunteered at Royal Animal Refuge where she helped “socialize puppies.” Joyce traveled extensively for pleasure and with mission groups. Some of her travels include England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy and all through the Mediterranean including Morocco and other points of interest. In ___ she traveled to Russia for a two-week mission trip to an orphanage in Moscow. She was also a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church. She loved to laugh, to garden, to read, to dance, to speak with friends in person and on the phone, but most of all she loved her family.
