October 5, 1936 - April 7, 2021
Betty Ann Hattaway Hargis of Palmetto, passed away on April 7 at the age of 84 after living with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung illness, for many years. A lifelong member of Friendship Baptist Church, she was an active force in the Friendship community throughout her life. Betty Ann’s enthusiasm, strong personality, and energy will be missed by all those who knew and worked with her in her many volunteer activities, for which she received numerous honors and awards. These activities included holding numerous offices in her beloved church and the Cedar Grove Elementary and Palmetto High parent-teacher associations. She was also active in the Old Campbell County Historical Society, of which she was a member for 50 years. Betty Ann was the unofficial historian of the community and was often contacted by relatives of local families asking for assistance in tracing their genealogy, which was another passion of hers. A 1954 graduate of Campbell High School in Fairburn, she was very involved over the years in planning many class reunions. Betty Ann loved her friends and was always among the first to offer support during difficult times, often in the form of delicious baked items. She also dearly loved her family and had a soft spot for stray animals which she welcomed into her family. Betty Ann is survived by her children, Anna Hargis of Newnan; Parra Vaughan of St. Simons Island, GA; Lila Rhyne of Palmetto; Howard (Howie) Hargis III of Palmetto; sister Ellen Hattaway Crawford and her husband, Perry of Palmetto; grandchildren, Chase Hargis and his wife, Sara, Chloe Hargis, Nicholas Hargis, Jared Rhyne, Addison Hargis, James Rhyne and special caregiver, Deborah Jenkins. She was predeceased by her loving parents, Frank and Corine Hattaway. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 11, 2021 at 2 o’clock at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Graddy, Lay Minister Calvin Arnold and Dr. Paul Mims officiating. Those wishing may sign the online guest registry at www.parrottfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 6090 Cochran Mill Road, Palmetto, Georgia 30268.
