Maud Christie

Maud Christie, affectionally known as “Miss Fidgey”, was born on January 14th, 1927 in Salters Hill, St. James; Jamaica, West Indies. She was born to Jestina Shaw and Thomas Christie, and later adopted and raised by who we affectionately know as “Muma” in the district of Chester Castle, Hanover. Maud was a leader and an entrepreneur at heart. She served her community in various roles, from beautician to saleswoman to caregiver. Maud’s most notable role was as the heart of her community. She loved to keep them in mind during her travels and made it a priority to bring back an abundance of gifts for as many people as she could. She never stopped thinking about the well-being of others. Her ability to nurture people did not hold her back from being fiercely strong and protective. She was never afraid to stand up for herself and was never known to back down. Maud also knew how to have fun. She never turned down a good party and used them as opportunities to step out in the most enviable outfits. She was a master at making friends wherever she went. Her charisma and humor transcended both language and cultural barriers. Her authenticity drew people in, making them want to show her the same kindness she showed them. Maud was always bursting with youthful, mischievous energy. She was always ready with a practical joke to make her family laugh. Her vibrant storytelling was always punctuated with her signature laugh. Maud was blessed with a green thumb. She proudly tended to several gardens throughout her years growing greens, tomatoes, pumpkins, watermelon and more. She loved to share the spoils with friends and neighbors. In spite of a remarkably humble life and limited education, Maud was able to rise above and raise five successful children. No matter how old they got, she still felt a strong sense of responsibility to do anything and everything she could to make their lives better, even if it meant traveling across several states to make it happen. Maud went through drastic changes in her final years. Regardless of these changes, her loving kindness and sharp tongue persisted until the end. Maud Christie was truly a one-of-a-kind spirit.
